Worship

Welcome to Hurlbut! We are United Methodists of Upper New York, and we are the one year-round congregation on the grounds of the historic Chautauqua Institution, first founded as a place for Methodist Sunday School teachers to learn.

Where Worship Welcomes

Here at Hurlbut, we are all about making sure you feel God’s abundant welcome and love in this worship space. You are welcome to:

  • Come as you are – Whether you wear a suit, a formal gown, a t-shirt and shorts, we don’t mind!
  • Bring your family – Kids are always welcome in our worship space, along with the joyful chaos and noise they sometimes bring. During the year, there are activity bags in the back corner of the Sanctuary to help kids (or adults!) engage with worship. We also have nursery care available, if you prefer.
  • Take Communion – We celebrate an Open Table in the United Methodist tradition, which means anyone is welcome to receive Holy Communion. We always have a gluten free station available (and only gluten free in the summers), and we use grape juice rather than wine. If you need prepackaged elements due to a medical concern, just let us know! Debbie will make sure there’s a baggie ready for you.
  • Tell us your needs – We have large-print hymnals available and the same WiFi hearing loops used by the Institution (download the app on GooglePlay or Apple). If you need a printed copy of the sermon manuscript, just let the Pastor know. Corrected captions for the sermon are usually available on YouTube by Monday afternoon. If there are other ways we can make the space more accessible for you, please tell us how!
  • Get involved – Want to be a liturgist? Join the choir? Become a lay preacher? Let us know! We’d love to invite you to share your gifts and help lead us in worship.
